I booked a slot to view and test drive an Audi A5 at Imperial Cars, Chertsey. Provided the viewing and test drive was acceptable, my aim was to part exchange my Audi A4 , and drive my newly purchased car back to Bristol ;a 220 mile round trip.

On arrival I was greeted by Luigi , the car sales person, who after taking a few details, allowed me to inspect the car at my leisure, and helpfully answered the few questions that I had about the car. He accompanied me on a test drive which was unhurried ,and on a route that allowed me to test the car on road conditions of my choosing.

The car was fairly priced taking into account its specification, and I was made aware of the additional ยฃ180 admin charge . So ,subject to an acceptable valuation of my A4 , I was happy to go ahead with the purchase.

So far, so good.

I had done some research on what my car was worth in part exchange for an A5 in this price range ,including an on line provisional evaluation from Imperial prior to making my appointment . Basically I was prepared to pay the screen price for the car and the admin fee, in return for a part exchange value near to the top end of their online estimate.

The sales representative went through the evaluation process and on completion presented me with a derisory figure ,far below the lowest value in their online range. I turned this down, and after speaking to his Sales Manager the valuation was increased by ยฃ500 .This was high enough to start a negotiation with the Sales Manager and after the usual posturing and โ€œconsulting his Directorโ€ we mutually agreed the final price, written in his own hand, and shook hands on the deal.

The remaining admin process was handed back to the the Sales Rep to hand over the car for my trip back to Bristol. He showed me the MOT and service documents which were fine, and went away to collect the V05.

After 10 mins or so, he came back and stated that he had bad news for me, โ€œ the Sales Director had upped the agreed price by another ยฃ180โ€ . There was no other explanation, and clearly the Sales rep was embarrassed ,having to do the dirty work for his anonymous Sales Manager. At this point , having them waste the best part of my day, I headed back to Bristol in my trusty A4.

If my experience is anything to go by, I would advise anyone to steer well clear of Imperial, particularly if you are considering part exchange.

Reason of review: Pricing issue.

Preferred solution: let other people know.
